My Waters
Lake of the Woods, Ontario
Lake of the Woods, with its 14,500 islands and 65,000 miles of shoreline, is literally a muskie factory. It has been ranked by many as one of the top muskie lakes in North America and with a 54" size limit imposed, it is truly world-record class muskie water! Lake of the Woods is the perfect destination to experience the rugged Canadian Shield while enjoying some of the best muskie fishing available anywhere. The lake is incredibly diverse and is home to many species other than muskie, such as pike, walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, lake trout, and crappie. I guide out of the Kenora area which is located on the northern section of the lake. Pike remain open all year, however muskies are closed until the 3rd Saturday of June (June 21, 2008).
Winnipeg River, Manitoba
The Winnipeg River flows west from Lake of the Woods and empties into Lake Winnipeg. Deep water and swift current make it ideally suited for the giant sturgeon that inhabit the river. The sturgeon are completely protected from harvest in Manitoba, and this has given them the opportunity to grow to impressive sizes. If you want a unique experience going one-on-one with a dinosaur, then the Winnipeg River is the place to be. The Winnipeg River on the Manitoba side also has large pike, walleye, and smallmouth bass. Sturgeon open on the 2nd Saturday of May (May 10, 2008), however the best fishing occurs late-May through to mid-July.
Red River, Manitoba
The "Red River of the North" is quite literally the channel catfish capital of the world. The Red River flows north from Minnesota to Manitoba where it empties into Lake Winnipeg. All channel catfish over 24" must be released, making this river literally loaded with trophy sized fish. In fact, it is very common to catch many trophy sized catfish (34" or 20+ lbs) in a day. The river is home to a huge array of species including carp, sturgeon, freshwater drum, walleye, sauger, goldeye, white bass, and pike. Rich in Canadian history and rich in fishing opportunities, the Red River is one of Manitoba's most popular and unique fishing destinations. Catfish open on the 2nd Saturday of May (May 10, 2008), and the fishing is great throughout the majority of the year.
